The Catholic Church played a central role in the destruction of Mayan culture through systematic campaigns to erase indigenous religion and enforce Catholic conversion. In 1562, Spanish Franciscan friar Diego de Landa led an inquisition in Maní, Yucatán, where he ordered the burning of 27 Mayan codices (and likely hundreds more over time), along with the smashing of idols and statues, which he claimed contained "superstitions and lies of the devil."
